Just over 20 years ago, the flying boats disappeared from the Sound, but now they can make a comeback. The technology company Candela has developed electric hydrofoils that create new conditions for passenger traffic in the Sound.

"The purpose of this is to show that with modern technology on ships, we can go fossil-free fast across the water," says Erik Eklund, head of commercial vessels at Candela.

Ferry version across the strait

Next year, the company's ferry version, with room for about 30 passengers, will be deployed in colletive traffic in the Stockholm archipelago. But the company also sees opportunities to resume airboat traffic in the Sound.

Are these airboats really needed when we have a bridge where both car and train traffic goes?

"I think there are a lot of people who miss the old boats from the past. If there is then an opportunity to be able to travel cheaper from Malmö to Copenhagen than the train, I think it will be very appreciated, says Erik Eklund.
