Despite a small drop in the free program, the American couple, already leading the standings Friday at the end of the rhythmic program, dominated the competition, achieving 226.01 points over the two heats.

Madison Chock, engaged since last year with her partner, said she was "on a little cloud". "I was so focused on our performance, and connected with Evan."

"We've been chasing this goal for so many years, and it just happened," Bates said. "It was exciting and stressful at the same time. Ice dancing is very competitive."

"We just wanted to focus on ourselves and deliver our best skating, showcase all our work this year and if possible put on a great show for everyone," added the American.

On the second step of the podium, the Italian couple Guignard-Fabbri obtained 219.85 points, ahead of Canadians Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier (217.88 points).

Two French couples were in contention on Saturday: Evgeniia Lopareva and Geoffrey Brissaud finished 12th with 183.61 points, and Loïcia Demougeot and Theo Le Mercier were 14th with 176.85 points.

These Worlds in Japan, held on the outskirts of Tokyo, take place without the 2022 Olympic champions and five-time world champions, Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron, who have put their careers on hold for at least a year.
