Julia was born and raised in Boden, but currently lives in Lysekil. She had intestinal problems already as a child and the family tried everything possible to overcome the problems but nothing helped.

Five years ago, things turned around. Julia had to do an extensive investigation at Uppsala University Hospital where specialists concluded that the activity in the colon was too low – and in January 2021 she was stomiopered.

"I had felt so bad and been in pain for so long, so I was really happy when I got an ostomy," she tells SVT.

"Don't be ashamed of poop problems"

Throughout the journey, she has chosen to share her life with ostomy on social media.

"There are so many young people who suffer from stomach and intestinal problems. But few dare to talk about pee and poop, but I don't think you need to be ashamed that you have poop problems.

What has touched you the most?

"People have said things like 'glad you show your bag, now I might also dare to show mine'. And in this way, we can help each other to normalize this," says Julia Nilsson.

Gut video overturned the internet

The 20-year-old's videos have had a gigantic impact and resonated around the world.

"When I showed my gut in a video, I got 15 million views. It apparently wasn't that common so the spread is great. Other clips usually last a few million views.

In the video, Julia shows what life with ostomy is like – and how she deals with the prejudices that have come into the bargain so far.
