It is not only in France that citizens take to the streets for pensions. In Uruguay, the PIT-CNT, the country's only trade union centre, had called for a one-day strike on Wednesday 22 March against the pension reform carried by the right-wing coalition in power. In particular, it plans to gradually raise the statutory retirement age from 60 to 65.

We won't work longer to earn less!" Education, transport, health and banking workers walked out on Wednesday (March 22nd) in Montevideo to protest against the Uruguayan government's pension reform project.

In front of Parliament, the demonstrators and the inter-union denounced a "criminal", "unpopular" and "unfair" reform, which they said would sacrifice workers and the most vulnerable sectors of society.

A new way of calculating pensions

In addition to gradually raising the legal retirement age from 60 to 65, the text notably provides for a convergence of special schemes, a new method of calculation for pensions and a solidarity supplement for small pensions. Enough to fuel the battle of figures between supporters and opponents on the possible winners or losers of this reform.

Adopted by the Senate in December 2022, the text is currently being debated in the Chamber of Deputies, where the right-wing coalition is in the majority.

Ahead of the mobilization, the government of President Luis Lacalle Pou defended a reform necessary for the viability of the Uruguayan mixed system, which combines distribution and individual savings.
