Presidents Emmanuel Macron and Abdelmadjid Tebboune spoke on Friday. Algeria's ambassador to France, recalled for consultations last month, will return to Paris in the coming days. The Algerian president is due to pay a state visit to France soon.

Signs of appeasement, mentioned in the communiqués of the French and Algerian presidencies, broadcast following the telephone exchange between Emmanuel Macron and Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

A conversation that "helped to remove the misunderstandings" related to the arrival in France of the Franco-Algerian activist Amira Bouraoui "with the support of the French consular services", on February 6, 2023. She risked being extradited from Tunisia, where she was, to Algeria. Algiers had seen it as an "illegal exfiltration" by the France.

More communication between Paris and Algiers

To prevent such situations from happening again, the two presidents now want to strengthen communication between their two administrations. Their conversation was also an opportunity to take stock of the implementation of the Algiers Declaration, signed in August 2022, at the time of Emmanuel Macron's visit to Algeria. Last point addressed, according to the press release: regional issues, and in particular the fight against terrorism in the Sahel.
