Last autumn, an agreement was reached between the party board and Jan Björklund to appoint My Rosell as the new political secretary in the town hall. A position currently held by Åsa Holmqvist.

But the appointment never happened and instead the group leader should have promised the position to both of them, something Jan Björklund believes is a misunderstanding.

"Jan has not been able to handle this handling and a majority of the board has judged that the actual issue and handling is so serious that it should be tested at a member meeting," says Mikael Andersson, chairman of the Social Democrats in Helsingborg.

Several weeks of hearings

Now the party executive board is urging Jan Björklund to leave the position of municipal councillor and group leader after six voted in favour and five against the proposal.

"We have tried to find middle ground and find some solution to the conflict. We think it's very tragic that we have come here where we need to take it to a member meeting, says Mikael Andersson.

Jan Björklund, for his part, has announced that he intends to remain in the two positions of trust if the party's members want to see him there.

"I take full responsibility for this, but it has taken on unreasonable proportions that a motion of censure is being raised," says Jan Björklund.

To be decided on Saturday

My Rosell does not want to stand for an interview but writes in a text message:

"I have confidence that the members' meeting will make a good decision based on fair and social democratic values.

At Saturday's annual meeting, members will take a position on the party executive's call, but a turnaround may yet come. According to the party's bylaws, a change to the agenda must be sent out to the party's members 14 days before the meetings take place.

This has not been done and therefore the party's members can vote against a changed agenda. Then Jan Björklund can remain in office.
