An additional 9,000 jobs will be cut this spring. They are in addition to the 18,000 job cuts decided in December and January. Total: 27,000 employees laid off in a few months, which is almost 9% of Amazon's permanent workforce.

The retail giant had largely profited from the Covid-19 pandemic and the frenzy of Americans and the rest of the world for online shopping, but the movement has clearly slowed. The group's management had started by making cuts in less profitable sectors: warehouses, voice assistants, drone delivery projects or automated shops or human resources.

This time, more money-making sectors such as online data storage or advertising seem likely to be affected. Jobs have been cut at Twitch, the recently acquired online streaming service, and work on the office building under construction near Washington has just been suspended.

Last quarter, Amazon reported almost no profit. Microsoft, Meta and other industry giants have also announced significant job cuts. And the bankruptcy of Silicon Valley Bank, the bank of the new technology sector, is not an encouraging sign either.
