John Andersson has done research on air pollution in Umeå, and its impact on health. Despite the fact that Umeå is a city with relatively low levels of air pollution, the levels still have a negative impact on the health of umebas. At its worst, it is near car roads with a lot of traffic.
"We need to reduce the number of cars in town," Andersson says.
Studded tyres part of the problem
Replacing petrol-powered cars with electric cars is not enough, says John Andersson. Road wear from tyres tears up particles that cause harmful effects on the brain. The biggest culprit is studded tyres, which cause extra road wear.
"It's not bad with electric cars, but you have to think about what you expect," says John Andersson.
