Many households have been hit hard by electricity prices that have skyrocketed and galloping food prices. Not since the early 1950s have the price tags on food in the store increased as much as they have in the past year, according to Statistics Sweden's Consumer Price Index (CPI).

But one person who is good at keeping costs down is the Stockholmer Günther Mårder.

"My lunch usually ends up between one and two crowns," he says.

He believes that big shopping, which is often highlighted as a good strategy to keep spending down, is not the way to go.

Financial independence

Saving is not about lack of money. Günther Mårder is ceo of the advocacy group Företagarna and says that he is financially independent, but he does not like to waste money on expensive food, clothes or things for the home.

"There are great opportunities for many to reduce expenses. It can be hard at first, but often it feels easier after a while.
