The decision to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 was taken after the government and Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne used the clause in the constitution that gives the prime minister the right to bypass members of the National Assembly and pass a law against their will.

The raising of the retirement age has been met with widespread protests and wildcat strikes. So far, 300 people have been arrested, TT reports.

To stop the motion, a motion of censure is required within 24 hours. Both parties on the right and left are reportedly preparing one on Friday.

A small group of 20 parliamentarians has already tabled a motion of censure. However, for it to pass, 58 signatures are required. Both the far right and the far left have said they will support the motion of censure. If you do that, you will bring down the government by a wide margin.
