"We know that where the children are, there are also the perpetrators," says Emelie Källfelt, senior prosecutor at the Prosecutor's Office's development center.

The number of convictions for sexual offences against children has increased in Sweden during the period 2015 to 2021. The largest increase is in the Bergslagen police region with 88 percent more convictions, at the national level the increase is 39 percent. See more in the fact box below.

No legislative changes are behind

Prosecutor Emelie Källfelt does not see that any changes in the law during the period may have contributed to the increase, but believes that only the titles of things that were already criminal have changed. Instead, she believes that children's increased mobile use and online presence may have contributed to the development.
