The US newspaper "Politico" said it had obtained customs and trade data proving that China supplied Russian companies with equipment that could be used in the war in Ukraine.

The newspaper added that Chinese companies sent a thousand Chinese CQ-A assault rifles and bulletproof armor, in addition to 12 shipments of drone spare parts to Russian companies.

According to trade and customs data obtained by Politico, the guns were shipped as "civilian hunting gear" between June and December 2022.

Although customs data does not show that Beijing sells a large amount of weapons to Moscow, it does reveal that China is supplying Russian companies with previously unreported "dual-use" equipment.

In early March, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken threatened to impose sanctions on China if it provided "any military support or assistance" to Russia.

At the end of February, China published a proposal to settle the crisis between Russia and Ukraine "peacefully", on the one-year anniversary of Moscow's war on Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Relations between Russia and China are growing, reinforcing NATO concerns about Beijing's possible military support for Moscow in the ongoing war.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said last month there was "growing concern" about China's intention to "arm and support Russia in the war" in Ukraine.
