The negative migration trend in Blekinge has been constant since 2002, according to Statistics Sweden's report "Migrations between counties, from where and where?"

Net migration is negative in almost all age groups but is highest in young adults between the ages of 18 and 30. It is especially those with post-secondary education who choose to change their place of residence, both while studying and after graduation.

Those who leave the county often settle in Stockholm, Kronoberg or Västra Götaland, but the most common is Skåne, where as many as 38 percent move.

One who plans to make that trip is the student Hampus Schön who moved to Karlskrona from Sjöbo to study at BTH.

– I think I will move back to Skåne, it feels more at home to me, he says.

The county's biggest challenge

According to regional board chair Christina Mattisson (S), the county must invest more in promoting the county better and offering housing, jobs and housing.

"The negative population trend is perhaps the county's biggest challenge that we have to make sure to reverse," she says.
