The sixth installment in the acclaimed horror film series is off to the best start in the history of the Paramount Studios franchise since its launch in 1996, according to these Friday-Sunday earnings estimates in the United States and Canada.

At the time, the film by Wes Craven, who died in 2015, had rejuvenated the genre with a mixture of horror and self-mockery, a recipe on which "Scream" always bets.

For this sixth episode, where the frightening "Ghostface" rages this time in New York, we find the fetish actress of the series Courteney Cox, but also the star of the series "Wednesday", Jenna Ortega.

In the box office ring, "Scream VI" beat out "Creed III," the ninth film in the "Rocky" boxing saga, and the first without Sylvester Stallone, which raked in $27.2 million.

"Creed III" still tells the story of Adonis Creed -- the son of Apollo -- who this time comes out of retirement for a much-anticipated confrontation against a friend of yesteryear.

This is the first film directed by Michael B. Jordan, who also plays the title role.

In third position, the new science fiction thriller from Sony studios, "65", with Adam Driver, picks up 12.3 million dollars.

Then come "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania", the latest in the Marvel series (7 million), then "Crazy Bear" (6.2 million).

Here's the rest of the top 10:

6. "Jesus Revolution" (5.2 million)

7. "Champions" (5.2 million)

8. "Avatar 2: The Way of Water" (2.7 million)

9. "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - On the way to the blacksmith village" (1.9 million)

10. "Puss in Boots 2: The Last Quest" (1.7 million)
