The Green Party will vote no to the government's proposal that enables Sweden to join NATO.

Instead, they will make their own proposal where the law will prohibit nuclear weapons from being brought into Sweden.

- We want it to be enshrined in law, as it is in Finland, that Sweden should not have nuclear weapons on Swedish territory either in peacetime or wartime.

That is not clear enough from this bill, says Per Bolund to Ekot's Saturday interview on Sweden's radio.

Bolund believes that the government's proposal does not provide any guarantees that nuclear weapons can still be brought into Sweden in the future and also warns that countries with nuclear weapons risk becoming targets in a conflict.

The Green Party also wants Sweden to work for the "no first use" principle in NATO, which means that nuclear weapons may only be used in response to a nuclear attack.

On Wednesday, the government submitted the bill on Swedish membership in NATO to the Riksdag.

The motion period expires already on Monday and on March 22 the Riksdag will vote on the proposal.
