Al-Jazeera correspondent in Afghanistan quoted a government source as saying that 4 people were killed and 16 others were wounded in an explosion that targeted a cultural center in the center of Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh Province in northern Afghanistan.

The source said that the center was holding a party to honor a number of journalists and writers, and that among the wounded were journalists.

Earlier, the Afghan police announced that one person was killed and five others were wounded in an explosion in the capital of Balkh province, in the north of the country.

"There was an explosion in the second police district in Balkh," Balkh police spokesman Mohammad Asif Waziri said, adding that three children were among the injured.

Balkh-based journalist Mohammad Fardin Norouzi told Reuters that he and other journalists were injured in the blast, but he did not provide further details.

The bombing comes two days after the assassination of the governor of Balkh Province, Mullah Muhammad Daoud Muzammil, in a suicide attack claimed by the Islamic State.

The Taliban authorities announced that they are investigating the explosion that killed the governor and 2 others in his office last Thursday.

The governor of Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan will temporarily administer Balkh, his spokesman said.

He added that this would be until the selection of the Taliban leader, Hebatullah Akhundzada, as the new ruler of Balkh, which is an important center for trade with Central Asia.
