In the early 1990s, the Riksdag decided that there would be double tracks for the entire 28-mile-long railway between Gothenburg and Malmö/Lund.

In that spirit, the tunnel was built through Halland's ridge.

And now work is underway on a double track between Ängelholm and Maria station in Helsingborg.

Double tracks through town are being investigated

But then?

The announcement about the last route – to Helsingborg's central station – has been delayed.

Until now.

This week, the government gave the task to the Swedish Transport Administration to start the investigation into how to go about laying double tracks through the whole city.

The government's decision talks about a railway tunnel that starts at Romares väg, next to Pålsjö östra.

But it might as well be on the other side of the residential area.

Or outside Maria station.

All possibilities are included in the discussions held so far between the city of Helsingborg and the Swedish Transport Administration.

Can become double track above ground

But the fact that it will be a tunnel is not set in stone.

It may just as well be that the double track is laid above ground, parallel to the tracks that already exist, through Pålsjö forest and on the viaduct over Gröningen.

- Building a tunnel is an expensive and noisy story.

It may be easier to build double tracks where the railway runs today, says Torgny Johansson, project manager at the urban development administration.

In that case, today's train tunnel between Gröningen and Helsingborg C will also be expanded to double track.

"Very gratifying"

The chairman of the municipal board Christian Orsing (M) is happy about the government's decision.

- Finally!

It is very gratifying that the government has decided to complete the last stage of double track to Helsingborg, it is something we have been pushing for for a long time, says Christian Orsing (M), chairman of the municipal board in Helsingborg.
