Every day, Europe 1 looks at an idea or a problem in your daily life.

To make the driving license more accessible to young people in the commune of Chelles, in Seine-et-Marne, the municipality has decided to finance training in exchange for community service.

A welcome help given the price of the little pink card.

It is small, pink and costs almost 1,800 euros.

It's the driver's license.

A colossal price for 18-year-olds, fewer and fewer of whom are embarking on driving training.

To help them, the municipality of Chelles, in Seine-et-Marne, has therefore set up a system: in exchange for a financial boost, young candidates volunteer for work for the municipality.

Europe 1 met them.

In his driving school, Gilbert, 25, plans his last hours of driving before passing the license.

But before that, he had to complete 70 hours of community service.

A win-win system

"Masonry, painting, carpentry", he lists.

In your pocket: 800 euros from the town hall to pay for your driving school.

A welcome help because his salary of 1,300 euros does not allow him to finance his driving lessons.

"The permit is necessary for my work. The help of the town hall somewhat reduces the financing of the permit, which I personally find too expensive", explains Gilbert.

Kevin, he had volunteered in a vaccination center against Covid-19.

A year now that he has the Holy Grail in his pocket and one more line on his CV.

"It also allows you to create relationships with professionals in the city. It allows you to see something else. It's beyond the financial aspect," he concedes.

And for Brice Rabaste, the mayor of Chelles, it's a win-win situation.

"The associations that benefit from these volunteers are happy to train young people. It is not uncommon for young people to remain volunteers in the associations", specifies the mayor.

This year, the City expects to receive 180 applications for permit assistance.
