The number of women developing games has increased to around 22 percent in recent years.

But Narin Yousef from Linköping thinks there needs to be even more.

- If you compare that number with those who play games, it is a very small percentage.

Close to 50 percent of those who play games are girls, so we need to become more developers, she says.

On Wednesday, it is International Women's Day, and Narin Yousef was awarded the East Sweden Games scholarship during the day, which will promote diversity in the gaming industry.

- It feels very fun.

I feel honored and it has given me a positive "boost", says Narin Yousef.

Girls are part of gaming culture

She grew up in Linköping and after training as an engineer in chemical analysis technology, she chose to start the game studio Aftnareld together with her partner.

They are currently working on the adventure game "Coridden", which the game studio hopes to release for real during the year.

She says that she too had an image of the gaming industry as "boyish" before she got into it herself.

But that many big games today are developed by girls.

- Girls, you are already part of the gaming culture so we don't have to feel like we have to get in there, says Narin Yousef.

The scholarship from East Sweden Game is SEK 5,000.

- Aftnareld was one of the first gaming companies to join our community.

Narin has really contributed to building our community with good values and a positive mindset from day one, says Tomas Ahlström, responsible for East Sweden Game.
