One case concerns a seconded Sida employee who held a high position at the embassy.

The person has worked with distribution, follow-up and control of Swedish aid funds to Kenya and Somalia.

Following suspicions that in one case the person leaked sensitive information from the embassy to outsiders, he has been summoned home to Sida in Stockholm with immediate effect.

Long experience at Swedish embassies

Right now, an internal investigation is underway at Sida to see if there is a crime.

There, what has occurred is referred to as an "irregularity".

Sida does not want to comment on information in the investigation, but says that it is a drastic and unusual measure to call home a seconded official.

The official has worked for a long time in the Swedish foreign administration and has previously been responsible for aid projects with a budget of around SEK 400 million.

Accused of corruption resigned

The second case also concerns a person in a high position, a local employee at the embassy in Nairobi for several years.

This case is separate from the first, although the investigations are ongoing at the same time.

Among other things, the person has sat on the board of a fund that had a turnover of around SEK 70 million in 2021, and has received at least SEK 50 million from Sida until 2015.

According to information provided to SVT, the embassy suspects him of corruption and having embezzled large sums of money.

The person himself chose to end his service, according to his own statement for other reasons, shortly before the investigation began.

The embassy has not yet made a decision on a possible police report to the Kenyan police.

- I consider myself innocent and I object to the fact that the Swedish embassy has spread information about embezzlement and corruption about me in the diplomatic community in Nairobi, before the investigation is complete, says one of the accused to SVT.

The embassy and Sida tell SVT that they look seriously at what happened, but do not want to comment on any information until the investigations are complete.

The other accused officials deny the allegations, but would not comment further.

Swedish aid to Kenya amounted to SEK 493 million in 2021.

Swedish aid to Somalia amounted to SEK 911 million in the same year.
