On March 6 local time, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that the strong earthquake that occurred in southern Turkey on February 6 local time has killed 46,104 people in the country.

  Erdogan said that as of now, more than 230,000 buildings have been seriously damaged in the earthquake.

The government plans to build 100,000 container houses within two months and move about 500,000 victims to places with relatively better living conditions.

  Erdogan emphasized that according to the current plan, the government will build 488,000 new houses for the people within a year, including 405,000 residential houses and 83,000 village houses.

Up to now, the number of houses under construction has reached 22,000, and construction of 244,000 residential units and 75,000 village houses will be started in the next two months.

  Erdogan said that in addition to the resettlement of the victims, the authorities have also taken measures to ensure the recovery of economic production in the disaster areas.

So far, the government has set up 6,000 temporary trading companies and a temporary market consisting of 3,000 containers in the disaster-stricken areas to meet the needs of basic business activities.

  On February 6, local time, two earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 occurred in Kahramanmaras province in southern Turkey within one day, causing heavy casualties and property losses. More than 10 provinces were severely affected.

According to a report released by the World Bank on February 27, the catastrophic earthquake caused about 34.2 billion U.S. dollars in direct losses to Turkey, and the cost of recovery and reconstruction work may be twice the direct loss.
