- It has been dramatic right to the end.

As recently as this weekend, it looked like this alliance created to unite the opposition to Erdogan was about to split precisely because they couldn't agree on who would be the candidate.

But on Monday evening they had finally managed to come to an agreement.

Kemal Kilicdaroglu of the main opposition CHP party will challenge Erdogan in the May 14 presidential election.

Thomas Thorén describes Kilicdaroglu as a well-known figure in Turkish politics.

A long-time leader of the main opposition CHP, the former ruling party founded by Turkey's father Ataturk and the one who will now lead an alliance made up of a motley crew of parties.

Must have the support of the Kurds

A challenge for Erdogan's opponents is that in practice they also need support from the Kurdish party, while a right-wing nationalist party is part of the coalition.

But Thomas Thorén still describes Kilicdaroglu's chances as good.

- It appears to be a historic chance for the opposition to actually win.

In terms of opinion, Erdogan is doing poorly because of the poor economy and also because of criticism about the lack of handling of the crisis after the earthquakes that shook the country.
