It was on Saturday 14 January that there was a shortage of places in one of the general psychiatric departments at the hospital in Jönköping.

The reason was that only eight out of 16 care places could be kept open due to a lack of nurses.

The prison service was hired for transport

A decision was made to move four patients, one to Eksjö and three to Värnamo.

As it was a weekend, staff were not available for all transports.

Therefore, the Prison Service's transport was hired for the patients who were going to Värnamo.

The staff from the Correctional Service informed the staff at the psychiatric clinic that the patients must wear handcuffs during transport according to their procedures.

In interviews afterwards, the staff described that they reacted to the fact that the patients had to wear handcuffs, but felt that they could not question the routines of the Correctional Service.

New routines must be introduced

Staff have stated that they felt stressed by the situation and felt compelled to resolve it quickly.

In the report to the Inspectorate for Care and Care, Ivo, the responsible manager writes that the security measures during the transport were not reasonable and that there was no legal support for any of the patients to wear handcuffs.

In the lex Maria notification, it appears that the operation will now review the routines around patient transport between the hospitals and inform the staff about what applies.

Work is also underway to recruit nurses to avoid a shortage of places in the future.
