Virginie Girod SEASON 2022 - 202305h00, March 06, 2023

Listen to the story of Pericles, the democratic tyrant, told by historian Virginie Girod in an unpublished two-part story.

The name of Pericles is inseparable from the Golden Age of Athens.

This strategist was the most important politician of the 5th century BC.

JC Exceptional orator, redoubtable warlord, he increased the powers of the people and adorned the Acropolis with its finest monuments.

Before becoming the powerful head of state and war, Pericles was a young Athenian aristocrat.

Self-taught, he trained during the first 30 years of his life in the politics of Athenian democracy.

He notably distinguished himself during the Dionysus celebrations by financing a play by Aeschylus.

Pericles is a talented man and rises through the ranks of Athenian politics at high speed.

He got himself elected strategist, general of the armies,

from his first application.

But this passionate democrat also and above all loved personal power… whatever the cost!

A few weeks before his birth in 495 BC.

J.-C., the mother of Pericles dreamed that she gave birth to a lion.

The lion is the symbol of power.

Agariste, like many women at that time, believed in oneiromancy, in other words, premonitory dreams.

She is convinced that her son will be promised a great destiny.

In fact, his son will have the character of a lion but also a very big head in the literal sense.

All his life, Pericles will be nicknamed "Schinocephal", which means "onion head" in Greek.
