Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the opening of a meeting of foreign ministers of the Group of Twenty countries in New Delhi that multilateral institutions have failed to address the most pressing challenges in the world.

"The experience of the past few years - financial crisis, climate change, pandemic, terrorism and wars - clearly shows that global governance has failed," Modi said.

The Indian Prime Minister appealed to those gathered to do everything in their power to make this occasion a success, despite his tacit recognition of the deep divisions that separated them because of the Russian war in Ukraine.

"We should not allow issues that we cannot solve together to derail those that we can solve," he said.

India finds itself in a delicate position, on the one hand it shares the West's concerns about China, and on the other hand it is a major buyer of Russian weapons and it has increased its imports of Russian oil.

India did not condemn Russia's war in Ukraine as Western countries had hoped, and Modi contented himself with telling Russian President Vladimir Putin last year that "this is not a time for war."
