The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority announced that the number of victims of the Malatya earthquake - which occurred yesterday, Monday - has risen to two dead and 140 injured, with the continuation of aftershocks in the country after the Kahramanmaraş earthquake on February 6.

The new earthquake occurred in the Yeşilyurt region of Malatya state (south of the country) yesterday at noon, and measured 5.6 on the Richter scale, according to the Disaster Management Authority.

Today, it was followed by a 4-degree aftershock in the state itself, according to the Turkish Seismological Institute.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Department said that 12 of the injured people are in critical condition, and 40 others are still receiving treatment, while the rest are recovering.

It also reported that search and rescue operations had been completed in 7 out of 31 collapsed buildings.

The Malatya earthquake came at a time when relief operations and rubble removal are still ongoing from the effects of the earthquake that struck the country 3 weeks ago, killing more than 50,000 people in Turkey and Syria, and was followed by thousands of violent aftershocks.

Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu met today with the Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Catherine Russell, in Ankara.

Cavusoglu said - via Twitter - that Russell arrived in the capital, Ankara, on a visit in solidarity with the earthquake victims.
