The Masai say that "the land we live on, we do not inherit from our parents, but we borrow it from our children" in a clear example of what their protection of the environment and the planet means.

In this is the team led by Professor Fernando Moreno, borrowing materials to create, in this case, not a new land but a new asphalt.

Because, the Masai project that he leads from the University of Granada, uses recycled materials, such as the tires that are discarded from cars after use, to create a much more durable asphalt for roads, with greater grip than the traditional ones. and, above all, much more sustainable.

An initiative focused on caring for the planet, in line with the joint work carried out by Banco Santander, Ferrari and F1.

These values and objectives borrowed from the Masai are also shared by Banco Santander, Ferrari and Formula One Management (FOM), the owner of F1.

It is about reducing emissions both in competition and in the automotive sector as a whole, and thus achieve a sustainable model with NetZero ambition.

In fact, the top automobile competition hopes to achieve net zero emissions by 2030.

And it is that this sport is demonstrating, more and more, that it can also face the challenge of sustainability without losing an iota of its show.

And, precisely because of the characteristics of this competition, the director of the Masai project is convinced of this: "F1 could be a perfect setting in which to test these materials, reintroduce recycled tires and evaluate them under the highest demanding standards."

An idea supported by Juan Manuel Cendoya, Vice President of Santander Spain and General Director of Communication, Corporate Marketing and Research at Banco Santander, assuring that "we are one of the largest car financiers in the world, which is why it is essential that we find solutions so that cars collaborate in the fight against climate change".

Together for sustainability

Formula 1 has always been an ideal setting for innovation and development in the automotive industry, from aerodynamics to brake design.

For this reason, with this sponsorship, and working closely together with Formula One Management (FOM), owner of the competition, and Ferrari, Santander has the opportunity to continue contributing to the fight against climate change, promoting change towards a sustainable model and helping to reduce CO2 emissions.

This is one more step along the path taken by the entity over the years in search of solutions that contribute to the transition towards a green economy.

In this challenge, innovation plays a determining role.

Therefore, the more we can accelerate innovation to find new technologies that contribute to decarbonizing our society, the sooner the goal of zero emissions will be reached.

And projects like the one they are working on at the University of Granada, inspired by the Masai tribe, could help to achieve this.
