The Geological Survey Service in Russia's far eastern Kamchatka region said that an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck today, Saturday, in the south of the peninsula.

The service of the Russian Academy of Sciences added that the quake occurred at 6:25 pm local time (9:25 am Moscow time) in the Pacific Ocean off the coast, 170 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Russian official sources did not announce any injuries or damage in the area.

The earthquake occurred in Kamchatka, two days after an earthquake measuring nearly 7 on the Richter scale in an area near the border between China's Xinjiang and Tajikistan, and no casualties were reported.

Since the earthquake that hit southern Turkey and northern Syria at dawn on February 6, which has so far left more than 50,000 dead, several neighboring countries have witnessed tremors of varying strength.
