Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) receives Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre at Harpsund on Wednesday.

The countries' foreign and defense ministers also participate in the meeting.

The meeting will focus on the security policy situation and support for Ukraine, but also the cooperation between the Nordic countries.

- It is a special situation in Europe with Russia waging a war against Ukraine, but it also provides an opportunity to strengthen common security in the Nordics, says Jonas Gahr Støre in SVT's Morgonstudion.

Russia unpredictable

The Norwegian Prime Minister says that Russia has become increasingly unpredictable and believes that the biggest threat from the country to the Nordics is its hybrid warfare, such as influence operations, cyber warfare and other methods of influence.

- It will require that we have close cooperation between the countries of Europe to keep this tension under control, and in that respect the dialogue with Sweden and Finland, as far as the Nordic region is concerned, is a very important channel.

That is why the meeting to be held at Harpsund today is important, he says.

"Reasonable" that Sweden and Finland join NATO at the same time

Gahr Støre expects a Swedish and a Finnish membership in NATO and says that it is "reasonable" that the countries join the defense alliance at the same time.

- They meet all the criteria to become members, he says.

- But this is determined by the ratification processes in the various NATO countries, he emphasizes.

So far, 28 out of 30 NATO countries have ratified Sweden's accession protocol, only Turkey's and Hungary's consent is a quarter year old.

- There is a generally expressed desire in NATO for Sweden and Finland to become members.

Sweden qualifies on all points and I think the Swedish government has proven that, says Gahr Støre.

Ulf Kristersson, Sauli Niinistö and Jonas Gahr Støre will hold a joint press conference at 15.00 after the meeting at Harpsund.

SVT Nyheter broadcasts live from the press conference.
