"France regrets the announcement made today by President Putin to suspend Russia's participation in the New START Treaty," the ministry said in a statement.

France also recalled that START is an important instrument of the international security architecture and called on Russia to "revoke its suspension statement" as soon as possible.

On February 21, Russian leader Vladimir Putin announced that Russia was suspending its participation in the strategic offensive arms reduction treaty.

Moscow does not withdraw from the agreement, namely, it suspends its participation, the President noted.

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia wants to make sure nuclear parity is observed.
