Since January 21, the rain has not fallen in France.

With a total of 31 days without water in France, the historic record for 2020 has been equaled.

A worrying situation since some regions have been on drought alert since last June.

An irreversible trend according to a climatologist from Météo France.

France dreams of rain.

For 31 days, not a single drop of rain has fallen in France.

A sad scenario that equals the historic record of 2020. There has been no significant precipitation since January 21, all regions combined.

The soils, already bruised by last summer's drought, are much drier than usual in February.

Thus, the Pyrénées Orientales have been on drought alert since last June as well as a large part of the Var since last week.

"In 10 days, we need rain": winter drought worries farmers

"Impossible to catch up with the trend"

"It is an extremely long period, without precipitation, which, unfortunately, accentuates the dryness of the soils which had already been well underway since last summer. The soils are dry almost as if we were in the month of April or May. This period of non-precipitation is bad news since we are still in this recharging period during which precipitation will be able to reach the groundwater", underlines Matthieu Sorel, climatologist at Météo France.

For him, "it will not be possible to catch up with the trend. Everything that is lost is lost forever."

"Failure to recharge the water tables will inevitably have consequences for the summer in terms of water resources, both for individuals, businesses, farmers, tourism... For everyone", he laments.

France is not the only one to face these episodes of drought.

In Venice, Italy, gondolas remain docked.

Light rain and an unusually long low tide are the two factors behind the famous canals being dry and silt visible through the water.

With the key, quite unpleasant odors.
