The anti-Russian resolution of the European Parliament on Ukraine is an attempt to justify the EU's course towards the escalation of the conflict.

This is how the Russian Delegation to the EU commented on the adoption of this document by MEPs on February 16.

"The purpose of the resolution is obvious - to deliberately mislead the European public, to try to justify the EU's course towards the escalation of the Ukrainian conflict and the strengthening of sanctions pressure on our country," the permanent mission said in a statement.

Diplomats called the document adopted by the MEPs "an example of disinformation."

“Not a single paragraph of the resolution is supported by any data, facts or evidence,” the mission said.

They also emphasized that the European parliamentarians ignored "violations of international humanitarian law by the Ukrainian military, despite numerous video evidence of torture and abuse of Russian prisoners of war."

“In the resolution, we did not find any mention of the strikes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the civilian population and infrastructure, such as, for example, on September 19 and December 15, 2022 on residential areas of Donetsk, on October 21, 2022 - on a civilian crossing near the Antonovsky Bridge in Kherson, on January 28, 2023 - on the building of the district hospital in the village of Novoaydar LPR.

There is no condemnation of the use of Nazi symbols in Ukraine,” Russian diplomats stated.

They ignored European politicians and the existence of discriminatory laws in Ukraine that infringe on the rights of national minorities and the Russian-speaking population, representatives of the Russian Federation to the EU say.

“However, it is difficult to expect otherwise from those who in Strasbourg in words pretend to be the defenders of the Ukrainian people, but in reality have long relied on war to the last Ukrainian,” the permanent mission concluded.

Resolution against peace

Recall, on February 16, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the events in Ukraine.

444 parliamentarians voted for it.

26 politicians voted against.

The document declares that "the main goal for Ukraine is to win the war against Russia, understood as the ability to push all Russian forces, as well as proxies and allies, outside the internationally recognized territory of Ukraine."

At the same time, the resolution emphasizes that "this goal can only be achieved through a steady continuation and constant increase in the supply of all types of weapons to Ukraine without exception."

In this regard, the EP deputies call on “EU member states to significantly increase the volume of military assistance and increase the pace of its provision in order not only to give Ukraine the opportunity to defend itself against Russian attacks, but also to provide conditions for the restoration of full control over the entire internationally recognized territory of the country ".

MEPs also called on the countries that had earlier promised to transfer tanks to Kyiv to fulfill this promise.

In addition, the EP suggested "seriously consider the issue of supplying Ukraine with Western fighters, helicopters and related missile systems, as well as a significant increase in the supply of ammunition."

A separate paragraph of the resolution was devoted to anti-Russian restrictions.

The deputies called on the EU leadership to adopt the tenth package of restrictions by the end of February, "in order to significantly expand the sanctions regime, in particular in relation to the economy and the energy sector."

It is proposed to do this by "banning the import of Russian fossil fuels, uranium and diamonds."

In addition, the EU Parliament proposed imposing sanctions “against all persons associated with the so-called Wagner Group and other Russian-funded armed groups.”

MEPs also considered it necessary to "completely abandon the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines in order to stop financing Putin's military machine at the expense of EU money."

In addition, the document proposes to “complete the formation of a legal regime that allows the confiscation of Russian assets frozen by the EU” in order to then use them to help Ukraine.

Other points of view were voiced during the discussion of the draft resolutions in the European Parliament.

Thus, a group of left-wing deputies led by Irish politician Mick Wallace proposed to amend the paragraph on the EU's goals in the conflict in Ukraine.

In contrast to the approved text, which refers to the need for Kyiv's victory over the Russian Federation, Wallace's version stated that "the main task of the EU is to ensure peace in Ukraine."

In addition, this version called on Brussels and the EU member states to “increase efforts to achieve a ceasefire and start peace negotiations”, as well as a recommendation to “support the peace initiative proposed by Brazilian President Lula da Silva to end the war through international mediation” .

However, during the debate, this amendment was rejected.

"Provoke nuclear war"

It is worth noting that the European Parliament regularly adopts anti-Russian resolutions, and, as analysts say, the tone of these documents often turns out to be even more militant than the official policy of Brussels.

So, in November 2022, in a resolution of the EP, Russia was named a sponsor of terrorism, although the EU did not make a similar decision at the official level.

And on January 19, the EP deputies voted for a resolution on the establishment of a tribunal against the Russian Federation because of the events in Ukraine.

The document also contains a clause on the possible confiscation of frozen Russian assets.

According to Vladimir Olenchenko, senior researcher at the Center for European Studies at IMEMO RAS, one of the goals of adopting such resolutions is an attempt to “cheer up the Kiev regime.”

“Such resolutions are aimed at instilling confidence in the Kiev regime, which is in a certain stage of political depression.

This is evidenced by the fact that various figures have recently been running away from the Zelensky administration.

Therefore, with the help of such resolutions, the EU wants to encourage the authorities in Kyiv, to push them to continue hostilities, ”the analyst said in an interview with RT.

At the same time, Olenchenko believes, such resolutions "provoke further involvement of Europeans in the conflict in Ukraine."

Experts also drew attention to the call of European parliamentarians to expand the supply of weapons to Kyiv and consider the possibility of transferring fighter jets to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

From their point of view, the opinion of European parliamentarians cannot influence the policy of the West in this matter, since the composition of military assistance to Ukraine is determined in the United States.

“Issues of arms supplies are decided in the White House.

Everything else is just talk that is designed to give this decision the appearance of legitimacy, so that it seems not to be the decision of the Americans, but the will of the entire Western world, ”political scientist Andrei Suzdaltsev said in an interview with RT.

Analysts consider "unrealistic" the EP's call to wage a "war against the Russian Federation until victory."

“These plans are unrealistic and dangerous.

Giving Ukraine any type of weapon so that it ousts a nuclear power from its own territories means provoking a nuclear war, ”explains Suzdaltsev.

He also pointed out that the European Parliament in its resolutions regularly ignores the crimes of the Kyiv regime, which led to the current situation in Ukraine.

“The main thesis of Western propaganda is: “Russia attacked the unfortunate Ukraine.”

At the same time, they know perfectly well that this is not aggression, but only a response to the crimes of the Kyiv regime.

When the cities of Donbass were bombed for eight years and thousands of people died, the European Parliament did not care.

They were not worried that Ukraine did not comply with the Minsk agreements,” says Suzdaltsev.

Such double standards are a characteristic feature of Western politics, the specialist emphasizes.

“Such a policy reflects the overall approach of the West to relations with the Russian Federation.

For them, Moscow is not a full-fledged participant in international law, and any agreement concluded with it, in their opinion, can be canceled.

At the same time, they consider Russia’s response to their aggressive actions to be obviously illegal,” Suzdaltsev concluded.
