Finland will and in that situation cannot drag out or stop the application process, the president is reported to have said.

He emphasizes, however, that Finland and Sweden are still in agreement about trying to become members of the defense alliance together.

Turkey and Hungary are the two member states that have not yet ratified membership.

Vote on NATO law in February

Today, the chairman of the Finnish Riksdag's foreign affairs committee, Jussi Halla-aho, also announced that the Finnish Riksdag will vote on the legislation needed to take the step into NATO as early as February 28.

Previously, the plan was to do everything after the Finnish parliamentary election in April, but there are deemed to be certain risks with that and the plan was changed.

To be discussed between the US and Turkey

Sweden and Finland's NATO applications are also to be discussed when Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken meet next week, it was announced yesterday.

However, Mevlüt Cavusoglu was clear that Turkey may treat Finland's and Sweden's NATO applications as two separate applications.

- We have discussed this with the two countries and NATO.

This means that Finland's NATO membership process may be evaluated separately from Sweden's, Cavosoglu said.

This weekend, US Vice President Kamala Harris will also meet Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin to discuss the NATO process.

The meeting will take place during the large, annual security conference in Munich, which runs from 17 to 19 February
