Sweden gets a new flag day every five years and it is the day of elections to the European Parliament, which must be celebrated with the blue-yellow flag waving in the wind, reports TT.

The European Parliament elections occur every five years in all EU member states and, according to a press release from the government, are an opportunity to celebrate and draw attention to democracy through flagging.

But not all parliamentary parties are behind the initiative.

The Sweden Democrats have tabled a motion that flag days should only be held on days "of symbolically important national significance", according to Europaportalen.

The change applies from 1 April 2023.
