Police in the US state of Texas said that one person was killed and three were wounded in a shooting at a shopping center in the city of El Paso.

Police spokesman Robert Gomez told reporters that a suspect had been arrested and that police were looking for a possible second.

The motive behind Wednesday's shooting is still unknown.

"It was chaos. People fled in panic," Gomez added.

Police asked people to avoid the area.

Cielo Vista Mall is located next to a Wal-Mart store, where a gunman killed 23 people on August 3, 2019.

A week earlier, a Texas man pleaded guilty to hate crimes in that massacre as part of a plea bargain that avoided the death penalty at the federal level, but he still faces the death penalty in a separate state trial.
