This confrontation between two of the men in form at the start of the season looked like a final before the letter.

Third player in the world, Tsitsipas remained on a Grand Slam final, in Melbourne where only Novak Djokovic had got the better of him.

Sinner, 14th at the ATP, opened his victory counter in 2023 last weekend by winning the Montpellier tournament.

The Italian was able to count on an excellent first ball, never conceding his service game unlike his opponent, broken three times.

In the quarter-finals on Friday, Sinner will face veteran (37) Stan Wawrinka who seems to be gradually regaining his feelings after two years marred by injuries.

Triple Grand Slam winner (Australia in 2014, Roland-Garros in 2015 and US Open in 2016), "Stanimal", fallen to 130th place in the world rankings, beat in the previous round, Wednesday, another veteran, the French Richard Gasquet (36), considering himself on the right path "to obtain great results this year".

The other poster of the quarter-finals will oppose the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, defending champion, to the Russian Daniil Medvedev.

The native of Montreal, seeded N.3 and 8th player in the world, had a quiet start to the week with successes in two sets against the Italian Lorenzo Sonego then the French Grégoire Barrère.

His meeting against Medvedev, 11th at ATP will therefore be a first real test.

And a real trap facing his pet peeve: in four confrontations, Auger-Aliassime has never won against the Russian.

The other quarter at the bottom of the table looks tight between the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (28th) and the Australian Alex De Minaur (25th).

The last match of the 1/8th finals was scheduled for Thursday evening with the Danish prodigy Holger Rune, seeded N.4, opposed to the Dutchman Gijs Brouwer to join in the next round another Dutchman, Tallon Griekspoor.
