In February 1994, Israeli settler Baruch Goldstein shot dead 29 Palestinians in a mosque in the city of Hebron.

Once upon a time, Israel's new Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, had Goldstein's portrait hanging in his living room.

The man who, as a teenager, was considered too dangerous for military service and previously expressed the opinion that people of Arab origin should be thrown out of Israel, has spent the last few years polishing his image.

Now he believes instead that disloyal citizens should be thrown out, regardless of origin.

Considered to stand for safety

When unrest between Israelis and Palestinians has flared up again in the West Bank, many Israelis believe that Itamar Ben-Gvir represents a security they cannot do without.

One of them is Benjamin Sipzner, who is himself involved in right-wing Israeli politics.
