A poll conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that 3 out of 5 female adolescents felt constant sadness in 2021, which is twice the rate recorded for males, and that one out of 3 female adolescents had "seriously" thought about suicide.

An article published by the American newspaper The New York Times, quoting the American Center's report, stated that the rates of grief that were revealed are the highest in a decade, explaining that the results of the survey revealed high levels of prevalence of depression, suicidal and violent thoughts, especially among lesbians.

The survey results show that "young people are telling us they are in crisis," Kathleen Ether, head of the Center's Adolescent Health Monitoring Program, told The New York Times.

The American newspaper quoted specialists who invited parents to monitor the behavior of their children, try to open the door to dialogue with them, and persuade them to talk, whether with parents or with specialists, especially if they show signs of depression and violent thoughts.

Factors

The specialists pointed to the negative effects of isolation, following the spread of the Corona epidemic, on the psyche of adolescents.

They also stressed the bad impact of social networking platforms and the use of smartphones on the mental and psychological health of adolescents, and admitted that this impact was not fully and accurately known yet.

Victor Fornari, deputy head of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at New York Hospital, confirmed the existence of a relationship between the use of social media and the exponential increase in the rates of suicidal behavior and cases of depression.

He told the New York Times that children are now more vulnerable to bullying and criticism, which strengthens their feelings of sadness, depression and violence.

He stated that the number of adolescents - who have suicidal tendencies - who come to the emergency room in the hospital in which he works, increased from 250 visits in 1982, to 3 thousand in 2010, and 8 thousand in 2022.
