Homelessness has taken on a new face, according to Stockholm's city mission.

It is about families with children who, without social problems, addiction or mental illness, are put on the back burner.

The families' vulnerability is about a lack of money.

According to the Kronofogden's latest statistics, the number of evictions involving children has not been this high in almost a decade.

In 2021, 572 children were forced from their homes due to one or both parents being evicted.

Most affected children in Skåne

But there are big differences around the country.

In Scania, just over a hundred children were affected by evictions in 2021. In Västra Götaland, half as many children were affected, despite a higher number of inhabitants than Scania.

Even in Stockholm County, fewer children were affected than in Skåne, according to the Kronofogden.

What is, however, common to the whole country is that in the vast majority of cases it is about parents' rent debts.

Protect the children's perspective

The increased cost situation has put a lot of pressure on many who live on the margins.

Last year, food prices increased by roughly 18 percent, according to Statistics Norway.

At the same time, a recession is imminent.

Now Stockholm's city mission fears that more families with children will end up homeless.

- We want to see an eviction ban for families with children.

You have to protect the children's perspective, says Åsa Paborn.

In the National Board of Health and Welfare's latest survey from 2017, they estimate that 24,000 children under the age of 18 have parents who are homeless.
