Tunisian police on Monday arrested Noureddine Bhiri, a senior member of the main opposition party and a fierce critic of the country's President Kais Saied.

"The police stormed Bhiri's house, assaulted his wife and arrested him," his lawyer, Samir Dilou, told Reuters without giving further details.

Bhiri and other Tunisian politicians are said to be suspected of having planned crimes against state security.

Noureddine Boutar, director of the independent radio station Mosaique FM, was also arrested on Monday, according to his lawyer Dalila Ben Mbarek.

It is not clear what kind of crime he is suspected of.
