Around 33,000 have so far been confirmed dead in the major earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday.

The UN fears that the death toll could be twice as high, writes the news agency TT.

Turkey is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries, but the first and biggest quake on Monday night, whose magnitude was measured at 7.7 or 7.8, was the biggest to hit the country since 1939.

The crack in the olive plantation in Hatay is 30 meters deep and extends over 35 hectares of land.

Local residents have described to CNN that they heard a large explosion during the earthquake.
