Virginie Girod SEASON 2022 - 202305h00, February 08, 2023

Listen to the historical account dedicated to the story of Emmett Till, the African-American teenager who, at his death, became the face of the fight for the abolition of racial discrimination in the United States in the 1950s. At the time, the former Confederate States of the South of the United States were subject to a form of segregation under the "Jim Crow" laws, which prohibited blacks and whites from mixing in the majority of public places.

In 1955, while vacationing in Mississippi and walking out of a grocery store, 14-year-old Emmett Till whistles at a white woman.

This seemingly banal gesture earned him the lynching.

In this new episode of the podcast "At the heart of history",

the historian Virginie Girod relies on the testimonies of the protagonists of the affair to tell the story of Emmett Till in the context of segregation in the United States.

This story was produced on the occasion of the theatrical release on February 8, 2023 of the film "Emmett Till, the face of a revolution", directed by Chinonye Chukwu, with Danielle Deadwyler and Whoopi Goldberg.

Subjects covered: Jim Crow Laws - United States segregation - racial discrimination - American civil rights movement - struggle of black Americans - NAACP - abolition of slavery - Confederate States - Rosa Parks - Malcom X - Martin Luther King.

"At the heart of history" is a Europe 1 Studio podcast.

Money, Mississippi, August 28, 1955. It was 2:30 a.m. when violent knocks came on the door of the Wright family lodge.

Moses, a tall, thin dark-skinned man of 63, answers the door.

Before him stand two white men: JW Milam and Roy Bryant.

The two men are looking for the "kid from Chicago" who allegedly misbehaved with Carolyn Bryant, Roy's wife.

They force their way into the house and rush into the children's room... This story by Virginie Girod is a Europe 1 Studio production.
