Samples taken from the teeth of the medieval skeletons discovered in the summer of 2019 show that both men appear to have come from places other than the site of the graves.

The values agree with several other areas, including western Sweden, Norway, northern England or the Baltics.

Buried with their swords

The two men also each had a sword whose scabbards were decorated with fittings, so-called dip shoes, representing a falcon.

- If you look at how these diving shoes are spread in Europe, they cover quite large geographical areas, says archaeologist Charlotte Hedenstierna Jonson.

She believes that the fittings are a sign that they belonged to a company of traders and warriors with branches over large parts of the Viking Age world.

- I don't think you should think that everyone comes from Mälardalen at all.

If you put the puzzle together, these are warriors who are connected to the eastern trade, she says.
