Risk of frostbite
Residents in several locations have been advised not to move outdoors for more than 10 minutes at a time due to the risk of frostbite.
In the city of Caribou, the American weather service NWS has received reports of "frostquakes", tremors in the ground which are said to come from the way the earth suddenly cracks in the ice.
