  On February 2, 2023, the joint work team of Jiangxi Province, City, and County held a press conference in Qianshan County, Shangrao City, announcing that Hu Xinyu had hanged himself to death.

It was also announced at the press conference that after Hu Xinyu went to Zhiyuan Middle School in September 2022, his poor academic performance caused a psychological gap, coupled with the pressure brought by interpersonal relationships and adolescent impulsiveness, which caused his mental state to be out of balance before his disappearance, and he had a clear sense of world-weariness Behavior and suicidal tendencies.

  How to deal with children's weariness of studying and world-weariness, and care for the mental health of teenagers?

Understanding these warnings can save your child!

  Yue Chunhe, deputy chief physician of the emergency department of Beijing Tongren Hospital and a national second-level psychological counselor, said in an interview with China News Service Guoshi Express, "Children talk about whether they are alive or dead." Going to school, "quite introverted child, seems to suddenly become cheerful, even a little noisy" These phenomena that are often ignored are very likely to be an early warning that the child is on the verge of extreme danger, or even the last call for help to the parents.

  Pan Xiao, an associate professor and deputy chief physician of the Psychology Department of Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, and a youth member of the Psychosomatic Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, believes that to avoid tragedies, it is necessary to understand the four stages of adolescents before they commit extreme behaviors.

  According to Pan Xiao, these four stages are the depression period, the help window period, the despair period, and the implementation period after despair.

  The period of depression stems from family problems such as parental divorce, school interpersonal problems such as bullying, and academic problems such as declining grades.

If this state lasts for a long time, it will be very painful, and thoughts such as "living is meaningless" will arise. However, this period is a precious window period for assistance, and teenagers will ask for help and call for attention.

For example, talk to friends, ask parents or teachers for help, seek psychological counseling, etc.

There may also be signs of words and deeds before suicide.

  Once this period is missed, teenagers will enter a period of despair from the window for help, and it is difficult to bring them back through general means such as psychological counseling.

Entering the period of despair, in principle, a medical treatment plan must be given based on the actual situation from a medical point of view, such as hospitalization, medication, etc., in order to have better results.

  He said that the early warning of juvenile suicide can be discovered and judged from two aspects: speech and behavior.

  Speech:

  1. Hint.

For example, it is better without me, what would happen without me, life or life is so troublesome, life has no value and meaning, etc. Negative world-weary emotional language;

  2. Express.

For example, I don’t want to live anymore, I want to die, don’t regret it when I die, or I’ll die if I do this again, etc. clearly express the willingness to die.

Even if the child occasionally speaks out unintentionally, attention should be paid and a psychological evaluation should be done in time.

  Behavior:

  1. Depressed performance.

"Three lows" appear, that is, depressed mood, slow thinking, and reduced behavior;

  2. Sudden change.

Originally introverted or extroverted, personality changes suddenly;

  3. Run away from home suddenly without saying goodbye;

  4. Self-injury and self-injury behaviors, such as scratching one's arm with a knife, hitting one's head against a wall, etc.;

  5. The child suddenly feels uncomfortable for no reason.

Especially introverted and sensitive teenagers who are unwilling to communicate, subconsciously suppress negative energy and cause headaches and other physical discomforts;

  6. Tired of studying, do not do homework, and grades drop rapidly.

  Pan Xiao said that attention should be paid to the above-mentioned characteristics of teenagers' words and deeds. If there are multiple manifestations at the same time, we must be highly vigilant that teenagers already suffer from serious mental health problems.

How to take care of children's mental health?

  Pan Xiao believes that if teenagers are found to have mild mental health problems or emotional problems that are difficult to solve, they should first find the school's psychology teacher, psychological counseling studio or medical institution for assessment to determine the extent of the problem and then obtain a solution.

  When the problem is serious, professionals from these institutions will advise parents to send to a doctor in time.

After years of development, the Chinese medical community is trustworthy in the treatment of psychological and spiritual problems and diseases.

  Yue Chunhe believes that in daily education, effective communication and companionship of parents is crucial to the mental health of adolescents.

Parents should try to use less adult thinking to intervene or even control their children, and empathize with them from the perspective of their children and understand their hearts.

In addition, we should also pay attention to helping and guiding children to establish a self-evaluation system, so that children can learn to balance the internal and external evaluation systems, fundamentally reduce the negative impact of the outside world on children's psychology, and avoid self-denial.

  Yue Chunhe gave an example, if the husband and wife are likened to a circle, the place where the two circles overlap is the world of the child's psychological space.

If the parents get divorced, they must be careful not to deny each other. Even if this kind of denial is not said in front of the child, the child can feel it, and it will have a negative impact on the child's psychology.

  Pan Xiao believes that the professional psychological teachers assigned by the school will generally teach children how to deal with negative emotions and psychological problems as required, including academic pressure, interpersonal conflicts, and family relations.

Parents should also pay attention to the development of adverse quotient (AQ) for teenagers, and learn how to deal with setbacks and regain confidence.

You can participate in more competitive sports activities with wins and losses, military-themed summer camps, and some outdoor activities to cultivate resilience. Let children have anti-adversity training and learn to face frustration.

  Pan Xiao also reminded children to avoid some badly guided games and comics.

Parents should also pay attention to strengthening the popular science learning of adolescents' psychological construction.

At the same time, the media, especially self-media, should not exaggerate celebrities and public opinion incidents involving suicide, so as to create a good public opinion atmosphere for the society.

The whole society should form a joint force

  To care for the mental health of adolescents, the professional knowledge reserves of teachers and parents are very important, but these alone may not be enough.

  In an interview with the China News Agency Guoshi Express, Zhu Min, the general director of Beijing 21st Century Kindergarten, suggested that the government should lead and cooperate with departments to build a three-in-one school, family and society to prevent youth suicide barriers.

For example, government departments can take the lead to organize experts and professional teachers to develop life education courses; strengthen home-school communication, timely detect negative emotions of teenagers and effectively intervene to ensure the normal operation of suicide prevention; build a nationwide psychological crisis social support network and suicide intervention network, and establish specialized institutions for suicide prevention, such as psychological clinics and psychological hotlines.

  Zhu Min believes that by learning from the successful experience of the United States and the United Kingdom in adolescent mental health, colleges and research institutions specializing in mental health can be considered as the leading professional, and schools, especially those in economically underdeveloped areas where there are relatively many left-behind children, can be considered. Docking, giving solutions to the psychological problems related to teenagers, and then combining actual cases to feed back into the research, and constantly forming specific standards, practices, and experiences to better guide practice.
