• In Hauts-de-France, the high number of vacancies between now and 2030 is likely to cause recruitment difficulties.

  • Five professions will be in particular tension: maintenance workers, teachers, vehicle drivers, skilled handling workers and home helpers.

  • The causes of this labor shortage can be explained by young people's lack of attraction to these professions, but also by significant retirements.

Attention, trades in tension in the region!

According to the latest study by the Department of Studies and Statistics (Dares), between job creation and departures at the end of their careers, 634,000 positions will need to be filled by 2030 (i.e. 57,000 per year) in the Hauts- de-France, which represents about a third of current employment.

This high number of vacancies is therefore likely to cause recruitment difficulties in the next ten years.

Five professions will be in particular tension: maintenance workers, teachers, vehicle drivers, skilled handling workers and home helpers.

Professions that attract young people

A majority of these professions are already in a strong imbalance at present, recruitment difficulties are therefore likely to increase in the near future.

"The causes of this labor shortage are explained by the lack of attraction of young people for these professions, but also by significant departures at the end of their careers", predicts Dares.

The large number of retirements concern maintenance workers in particular (45,000 by 2030).

“In addition, in most cases, these professions are held by women after a period of inactivity, explains Dares.

In addition, professions such as caregivers or maintenance workers are exercised to have additional income.

On the other hand, to obtain a job as a skilled handling worker, it is mandatory to have specific training.

And few young people have it, so candidates will be difficult to find.

On the contrary, trades are overrepresented in Hauts-de-France.

This is explained by the high development of industry (automotive, metallurgy, textiles, etc.), logistics and public services in the region.

The latter will therefore experience fewer difficulties in recruiting in these different areas than the rest of France.
