• A man was tried in immediate appearance Wednesday in Strasbourg, suspected of having thrown his little dog from the fifth floor on Monday morning.

  • Jérôme D. was sentenced to twelve months in prison, eight of which were suspended.

  • “The conviction is up to par.

We have the feeling of having been heard by the courts, ”reacted the manager of the Strasbourg SPA kennel, Catherine Bronner.

There were a lot of people this Wednesday afternoon in room 101 of the Strasbourg court.

Not for the immediate appearance of two men prosecuted after using a Belgian identity card.

No, around thirty people, including seven associations who had filed civil suits, had come for the next case.

The one where an individual was suspected of having thrown his little dog from the fifth floor, Monday morning, in a district of the Alsatian capital.

Victim in particular of a fracture of the spine, "Moka" had to be euthanized the next day, his abuse being too serious.

At the bar, Jérôme D. refuted the thesis of the defenestration, which a witness accused him of.

He assured that the animal had fallen alone, attracted by “the duck liver pâté [that he] had placed on the edge of the window”.

"Why didn't you put it in the fridge?"

“, then questioned the judge.

“Because it's a mess inside.

There is mold, ”replied the forties who also advanced his blood alcohol level at that time.

He had been checked at 8 am with 0.90 mg/litre of exhaled air, after a restless evening.

“I had drunk strong beers and a bottle of red wine at 17° […] I was staggering,” explained the defendant, unemployed and housed by the “Horizon Amitié” association.

His behavior in front of the inert body of the one-and-a-half-year-old Pekingese crusader was denounced by several civil party lawyers.

"His dog is dying and he is quietly rolling a cigarette," pointed out a piece of advice.

"When your animal has a problem, you don't take an hour to react or you don't say in police custody that you are going to make a stew of it," added one of his colleagues.

“It was a bullshit joke”, had tried to clear Jérôme D., a few minutes earlier, who repeated his attachment to Moka: “I loved him too much, he was my little love dog”.

"And a 'damn dog' too, as you also called him after your neighbors," the president of the court had then pointed out to him.

“He has been lying from the start in this case.

There is no pâté that was found in the apartment or outside.

His statements are a fable that they tell to escape responsibility, ”pointed out the public prosecutor.

The latter requested a one-year prison sentence with a permanent ban on owning an animal.

The defense has put forward the weak judicial past of his client, simply sentenced to two weeks in prison suspended for acts of contempt.

“Mr. D. takes care of his dog, which is not undernourished and has good hair.

He never neglected it […] Yes he should never have left the window open, but it was an unfortunate accident that happened”, pleaded his lawyer, asking for the release.

"I loved my dog, that's the truth," insisted the defendant one last time.

Shortly after 7 p.m., the verdict fell.

Jérôme D. was sentenced to twelve months in prison, eight of which are suspended.

He is also permanently prohibited from keeping an animal and must pay damages to each civil party.

Including 1,200 euros to the Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA).

“The conviction is up to par.

We have the feeling of having been heard by the courts, ”reacted the manager of the Strasbourg SPA kennel, Catherine Bronner.
