Erdogan: We will not allow Sweden to join NATO if it allows the burning of the Koran

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reaffirmed today, Wednesday, that Turkey will not allow Sweden to join NATO as long as it continues to allow behavior that insults the Holy Quran.

Turkey, which is blocking the accession of Sweden and Finland to the military alliance, was enraged by a series of demonstrations in Stockholm by activists, during which they burned the Holy Qur’an in front of the Turkish embassy and hung an effigy of Erdogan.

Turkey postponed indefinitely an important meeting in Brussels that was to discuss the two countries' accession to NATO.

Erdogan said in a speech to the deputies of his ruling party: "Sweden, do not exhaust yourselves! As long as you allow the burning and tearing of the Qur'an, and you do so in cooperation with your security forces, we will not say yes to your joining NATO."
