In 2017, Lula da Silva was sentenced to almost ten years in prison on corruption charges.

In 2018, the same year Jair Bolsonaro came to power, he was locked up.

Lula spent 18 months in prison but was released in 2019 when one of the judges who sentenced him was considered biased.

And in 2021, the sentence was overturned as it was considered politically motivated and Lula was once again allowed to run for president.
