In 2022, women in Hesse earned significantly less per hour than men.

The Hesse State Statistical Office announced this on Monday.

The so-called unadjusted gender pay gap was 21 percent in 2022: At EUR 26.90 per hour, men earned EUR 5.55 more than women.

According to the statisticians, the most important measurable reasons for the wage difference are structural differences such as different industries, professions and requirements as well as the scope of employment and the training qualification.

This could explain 70 percent of the difference in earnings between men and women.

The adjusted gender pay gap indicates the size of the wage differences for comparable qualifications and positions.

According to the statisticians, in 2022 it was still six percent and thus one percent lower than the adjusted nationwide gender pay gap.

According to the statisticians, the adjusted gender pay gap should be understood as the “upper limit” of earnings discrimination, since not all influencing factors relevant to the analysis were available.

For example, there is no information on family-related career breaks.

At the beginning of the measurement in 2006, the unadjusted gender pay gap in Hesse was 23 percent.

In 2020 and 2021 it fell to its all-time low of 18 percent.

However, the values for 2022 are only comparable with previous years to a limited extent, as the calculation method has changed: from 2022, the wage differences were calculated on the basis of new monthly earnings surveys, until 2021 the adjusted gender pay gap could only be collected every four years with detailed data.
